Our formula for friendship: Skills + Coaching + Access to Peers

People sometimes ask us what makes PEERS® different from other social skills programs. The honest answer is that we've never believed friendship comes down to any single thing. It comes from a combination - and we think of it as a simple formula:

Skills + Coaching + Access to Peers = Friendships

Each part matters. Take any one away, and the whole thing falls short. Here's why.

Skills

First, young people need to actually learn what to do. Not vague encouragement, but clear, step-by-step teaching - how to start a conversation, choose friends who are a good fit, handle a disagreement, be a good sport. In PEERS®, every skill is taught explicitly and shown through demonstration, so young people know exactly what's helpful in a given moment and why. This is the foundation everything else is built on.

Coaching

Skills learned in a session don't stick without practice - and practice works best with support. That's why every young person has a social coach, usually a parent, who learns the same skills and helps them try things out in real life during the week. The coach turns "I understand it" into "I can do it," and their involvement is one of the big reasons the results last well beyond the program.

Access to Peers

Here's the part that's easy to overlook: friendships don't happen in a vacuum. Young people need regular, ongoing contact with peers who share their interests and are likely to be accepting of them. That's what we call a source of friends. It might be a club, sports team, gaming group, art class, volunteer role or any other activity built around something they enjoy. Finding the right source of friends is one of the key skills taught in PEERS®, because it's where new skills get used and where real friendships have the best chance to grow.

= Friendships

Put the three together - the right skills, a supportive coach, and genuine access to peers - and you create the conditions where real, lasting friendships can grow. Not because we've changed who a young person is, but because we've given them everything they need to connect in a way that feels natural to them.

That's the formula. It's simple, but each piece is essential - and it's exactly what our program is built around.
