Help Your Loved One Navigate Common Social Challenges

We understand that navigating social situations can be tough, especially when you have autism, ADHD, or other social challenges. Whether you're a teen, a young adult, or a parent supporting someone in their social development, these challenges are real, and they can be frustrating.

The PEERS® Social Skills Boot Camp for June 2025 and designed to address these struggles and help participants improve their social interactions in a structured, supportive environment. But why should you consider this Boot Camp for you or your child? Let’s look at some of the common pain points and how this program can provide real solutions.

Social Anxiety and Fear of Rejection

Many individuals with social challenges experience intense social anxiety. The fear of rejection, being judged, or making social mistakes can make it difficult to even start conversations or approach others. This can lead to isolation and lower self-esteem.

In the PEERS® Social Skills Boot Camp, participants are taught in a safe, structured environment where mistakes are seen as part of the learning process. Through role-playing exercises, guided feedback, and real-world practice, participants gain the confidence to start, maintain, and exit conversations smoothly. By practicing these skills, they can overcome their social fears and experience the empowerment that comes with making new friends and joining in social activities.

Struggling to Maintain Friendships

Building lasting friendships can be incredibly difficult if you don’t know how to maintain a conversation or navigate the social expectations involved. You may start talking to someone but struggle to keep the conversation going, or you might not know how to deepen a relationship once you’ve made contact.

PEERS® focuses on teaching the skills needed to maintain reciprocal conversations. Participants learn how to ask questions, share experiences, and respond appropriately to others, which can help them build meaningful connections. Our program is specifically designed to create opportunities for practicing these skills through role-playing and interactive exercises, giving participants the tools to form and maintain friendships with confidence.

Difficulty Understanding Social Cues

Social interactions are filled with non-verbal cues, such as body language, tone of voice, and facial expressions. For someone with social challenges, it can be overwhelming to decode these subtle signals, leading to miscommunications and social awkwardness.

One of the core components of the PEERS® Boot Camp is learning the unspoken social rules. We teach participants how to recognise social cues, like when someone is uncomfortable or when a conversation is over, and how to respond appropriately. Role-playing scenarios allow participants to practice these cues in real-life situations, making the process feel less intimidating and more natural.

Lack of Opportunities to Practice Social Skills

One of the biggest barriers to improving social skills is not having enough opportunities to practice. It’s hard to improve when you’re unsure where or how to apply your skills in real-world settings.

The PEERS® Social Skills Boot Camp is specifically designed to create structured opportunities for practice. Over four consecutive Saturdays, participants will engage in interactive exercises where they can apply the social skills they’ve learned, receive constructive feedback, and gradually improve their ability to handle various social situations. These practice sessions simulate real-life scenarios, so participants feel more prepared when they encounter them in the future.

Frustration with Misunderstanding and Miscommunication

Many individuals with social challenges find it hard to know how to interpret or respond to social situations. They may have trouble understanding sarcasm, jokes, or indirect communication, leading to frustration and misunderstandings.

The PEERS® program includes direct teaching of social cues, conversational strategies, and how to manage different types of conversations. Whether it’s asking someone on a date, dealing with rejection, or accepting rejection, our interactive lessons will ensure that participants gain practical skills that they can apply to these tricky situations. The Boot Camp also covers how to manage conflicts and how to recover from social mistakes—key elements that help build social resilience.

Parents Don’t Know How to Support Social Development

Parents and caregivers of children with social challenges often feel unsure of how to help. They may want to support their child’s social growth but don’t always know the best approach.

In addition to the skills participants will learn, PEERS® offers four online webinars for parents and social coaches. These webinars teach how to support the participant’s growth, how to give constructive feedback, and how to be an effective social coach. Having parents involved in the process is a crucial part of the success, as it provides a constant support system at home.

Limited Access to Programs That Address Social Challenges

Many social skills programs are either too generalised or not accessible for individuals with specific needs like autism, ADHD, or social anxiety. Finding a program that caters specifically to these challenges can be difficult.

The PEERS® Social Skills Boot Camp is an evidence-based program specifically designed for individuals with social challenges. This program provides targeted strategies and practical tools that are custom-tailored to meet the needs of teens, young adults, and their families. As one of the most respected programs of its kind, PEERS® offers a research-backed, comprehensive curriculum that’s proven to be effective.
